"When are you speaking to the band?" an inquiry reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There's just a single issue: I also wants to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're not alone. A host of high-profile admirers have also begged for the honor.

One thing is obvious something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the greatest ensembles, they're a tight-knit trio. Their visuals frequently show them striding in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such unfettered happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "It is the ultimate compliment. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage others to make music."

"Therefore all gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Award Nod

The group are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major achievement," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The album was born from a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that unique liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The words track departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they want to be.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to consciously practice ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That newfound confidence called for a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The trio's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories.

One man broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international fan base.

But the sister act will forever be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
